Switch the Lens: How Perspective Can Change the Way You Experience Your Life

If God Wanted Us Looking Down…

I was taking my little walky today.

It was chilly, but the sun was out.

And suddenly this thought popped into my head:

If God wanted us to look down upon ourselves, He would’ve put the sun in the dirt.

I laughed.

Because, honestly, my brain comes up with some shit.

But then I thought about it a little more.

And there was actually something pretty powerful underneath the ridiculousness.

Because how often do we look down on ourselves?

Not literally.

But internally?

We criticize ourselves.

We compare ourselves.

We focus on what we didn't do.

We replay conversations.

We obsess over what we should have done differently.

We decide we're behind.

We're not enough.

We're too much.

We're failing.

We're not where we "should" be.

And then we wonder why we aren't creating the life we want.

Oh ya. I said it, Fam.

What If You Just Switched the Lens?

I'm not talking about toxic positivity.

I'm not saying you have to pretend everything is amazing when your life is currently held together with caffeine, duct tape, and sheer determination.

I'm talking about curiosity.

What else could be true here?

Sometimes the shift is tiny.

Sometimes it's the motherload.

But both matter.

Because the way we look at something can influence the way we experience it.

And sometimes we don't need a completely different circumstance.

We need a different perspective on the circumstance we're already in.

Case in Point: The Morning Circus

This morning, I was getting four out of my five kiddos ready for school.

And, well…

The chaos was CHAOSING.

"Keep your hands to yourself!"

"Stop freaking fighting!"

"Get your shoes onnnnnnnnn!"

For approximately the 7,428th time.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it, I thought:

Man… I could really use an adventure somewhere else.

Then the kids got on the bus.

My four-year-old was playing.

The house got quiet.

And I thought:

Maybe… just maybe… THIS is the adventure.

Same house.

Same kids.

Same life.

Different lens.

And suddenly, something shifted.

Sometimes the Life You're Looking For Is the One You're Already Living

This is where perspective gets interesting.

Sometimes we're so focused on what we think is missing that we don't notice what's already here.

The adventure might not be the trip.

It might be the breakfast date with your husband.

The walk around the block.

The phone call with your cousin.

The quiet cup of coffee.

The ridiculous conversation with your kid.

The five minutes where nobody is asking you for anything.

Or maybe it's simply realizing:

Holy shit. I'm actually living a life I once prayed for.

That doesn't mean every moment is wonderful.

It doesn't mean you can't want more.

It doesn't mean you shouldn't make changes.

It simply means you can hold gratitude and desire at the same time.

You can want something different without deciding that what exists right now isn't enough.

Your Attention Is Information

Here's where I want to bring intuition into this conversation.

Pay attention to what you're noticing.

What keeps catching your attention?

What makes you curious?

What makes you feel lighter?

What makes you think, Hmm… maybe there's something here.

And on the flip side:

What consistently drains you?

What makes you contract?

What stories do you automatically tell yourself?

What are you assuming is true without actually questioning it?

Your attention can be information.

Not necessarily an instruction.

Not necessarily a sign that you need to blow up your entire life and move to the mountains.

Just information.

And when you get curious about that information, you create space to choose differently.

Try This: Switch the Lens

The next time you catch yourself thinking:

"I can't do this."

Try:

What would make this feel more doable?

When you think:

"My life is so boring."

Try:

What might I be overlooking?

When you think:

"I need an adventure."

Try:

What kind of adventure am I actually craving?

When you think:

"Something needs to change."

Try:

What is it that's asking to change?

Not everything needs to be fixed.

Sometimes it simply needs to be seen differently.

A Little Challenge for You

Today, notice one moment where you automatically look down.

Maybe you're judging yourself.

Maybe you're frustrated with your circumstances.

Maybe you're wishing you were somewhere else.

Pause.

Take a breath.

And ask:

What else could be true here?

You don't have to force a positive answer.

You don't have to convince yourself that everything is perfect.

Just get curious.

Because curiosity creates space.

And sometimes, that space is where the shift begins.

So… What Captures You?

Maybe that's the bigger question.

What captures your attention?

What captures your energy?

What captures your curiosity?

And more importantly…

Why?

Because sometimes what captures us is showing us something we need to know about ourselves.

And sometimes the answer isn't "I need a new life."

Sometimes it's:

I need to experience this life differently.

Same life.

New lens.
