When Joy and Grief Show Up Together

Learning to Hold Celebration and Loss at the Same Time

There are moments in life that remind you just how beautifully complicated being human really is.

This weekend was one of those moments.

My family gathered to celebrate my oldest daughter's high school graduation. Family traveled from all over. There were hugs, laughter, proud tears, pictures, stories, and all the joy that comes with watching your child step into a brand-new chapter.

Just a couple of days before...

We lost my aunt.

So, there I was.

Laughing.

Celebrating.

Holding my daughter.

Taking photos.

Then quietly slipping away for a few minutes so I could cry.

Both moments existed.

At the exact same time.

And I think we need to normalize that.

Joy Doesn't Erase Grief

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that emotions should stay neatly organized.

If you're grieving...

You should only grieve.

If you're celebrating...

You should only celebrate.

Life doesn't work that way.

Real life is layered.

Joy doesn't erase grief.

Grief doesn't cancel joy.

They often sit at the very same table.

One doesn't invalidate the other.

In fact, allowing yourself to experience both may be one of the healthiest things you can do.

You're Not Doing It Wrong

If you've smiled while grieving...

You're not doing grief wrong.

If you've cried during a celebration...

You're not ruining the moment.

If your heart feels split between gratitude and heartbreak...

You're not broken.

You're human.

Life rarely waits for us to completely process one season before introducing another.

The chapters overlap.

The emotions overlap.

Our hearts somehow learn to hold both.

Sometimes Grief Holds Peace Too

One thing I've learned through loss is that grief isn't always just sadness.

Sometimes...

There is peace woven into it.

When someone you love has suffered, there can be comfort in knowing they're finally Home with God.

The tears still come.

The missing never completely disappears.

But peace quietly finds its seat beside grief.

Both belong.

Your Body Carries What Your Heart Doesn't Express

One of the greatest lessons I've learned as both a nurse and a life coach is this:

Emotions don't disappear because we ignore them.

They simply move.

They settle into our bodies.

Our nervous systems.

Our thoughts.

Our relationships.

Our sleep.

Our stress.

Our health.

Please don't silence what you're carrying simply because you're afraid of making someone else uncomfortable.

You are the one who wakes up with yourself every morning.

You are the one who goes to sleep with yourself every night.

Your heart deserves honesty.

Give Yourself Permission

Maybe today your permission sounds like this:

Cry.

Laugh.

Celebrate.

Pray.

Step outside.

Take five minutes.

Take ten.

Come back when you're ready.

Your emotions don't have to compete.

They can coexist.

And if today feels especially heavy...

Lean.

You were never meant to carry every chapter alone.

(And if you've ever seen me carry five grocery bags, three laundry baskets, and emotional support snacks all in one trip... trust me, these shoulders have had plenty of practice. 😂)

A Gentle Reminder

Friend...

Life will continue handing us celebrations and heartbreak—sometimes in the very same week.

Neither makes the other less real.

Hold the joy.

Honor the grief.

Trust that your heart has room for both.

Because love is big enough for all of it.

With love,

Dawn 💛
