How do I get to where I want to be?

Updated: Dec 2, 2024

My Story

As I started my journey into nurse coaching, the theme became "get comfortable with being uncomfortable!" And I have to say, I am very good at that now. I understand that my ego was taking over and I was listening to whatever story I had made up about myself or a story someone else had made up about me.

"Cool, are you ready to take the messy action needed to get to your dream?" When my Nurse Life Coach asked me this, I froze. I had never been asked this before. Sure, I was asked about "what is your dream life", but not "how do you get there". In that exact moment I knew I had to change all of it; how I thought, how I spoke, how I wanted, how I moved about, my dream life.

As you read the following, ask yourself the same question I was asked and define your messy action!

How to Achieve Your Goals: The Power of Accountability and Surrender

Do you ever find yourself asking, "If my dream, peace, or goal is over there, how do I get to it?" I ask myself this question all the time. It’s one of the most common inquiries I hear from clients when we start working together, and it’s a question that many people struggle with. So, how do we actually reach that place of fulfillment and success?

The answer is simpler than we often realize: accountability. But there’s more to it than that — sprinkle in a little surrender, and suddenly you have a powerful formula for achieving your dreams.

Why Do We Wait to Make Change?

One of the most perplexing things I’ve observed is why we often wait until the situation becomes unbearable to make a change. It seems like a universal human response — we get comfortable, even if it’s not the best situation, and only make a move when we’re pushed to the edge. But why?

The answer might lie in our human nature. Change can be scary, uncomfortable, and sometimes even overwhelming. But when we take a closer look at ourselves, we start to realize that change is exactly what’s needed to guide us to our righteous, deserving path. It’s work, but it’s work worth doing.

The Key to Reaching Your Dreams: Accountability and Surrender

If you’re asking yourself, "How do I get to my dreams?" the first step is embracing accountability. Accountability isn’t just about having someone else check in on your progress (though that can help); it’s about holding yourself to the promises you make. It’s about showing up, even when it feels hard, and continuing to take steps toward your goal.

But it’s not just about effort. This is where the power of surrender comes in. Surrendering means letting go of control and trusting the process. It’s about being willing to face uncertainty and not knowing exactly how or when you’ll arrive at your destination. Surrender doesn’t mean giving up — it means releasing the need for perfection and allowing the journey to unfold naturally.

The Journey Is Just as Important as the Destination

Remember, life is never an end, but always a beginning. Reaching your dreams isn’t about crossing a finish line — it’s about the ongoing journey of growth, self-discovery, and transformation. The work you do to move closer to your goals makes you stronger and more resilient.

As you start to embrace both accountability and surrender, you’ll find that not only do you reach your dreams, but you also become a more grounded, fulfilled version of yourself along the way.

Final Thoughts

The path to achieving your dreams doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It’s about showing up for yourself, holding yourself accountable, and learning to trust the process. Life’s journey is a continuous beginning, and with each step, you’ll grow closer to your goals.

So, if you’re ready to take that next step, embrace accountability, surrender control, and watch the magic unfold. Your dreams are waiting for you — all you have to do is start.
